Mike Seeger Receives 2009 NEA Betty Lomax Hawes Award

Just in time for his half-brother Pete’s 90th birthday, Mike Seeger has been awarded the Bess Lomax Hawes Award from the National Endowment of the Arts for his achievements as a musical historian, folklorist and gifted instrumentalist.

The 2009 Bess Lomax Hawes Award is awarded to Mike Seeger, a musician, cultural scholar, and advocate from Lexington, Virginia. The Bess Lomax Hawes Award recognizes an individual who has made a significant contribution to the preservation and awareness of cultural heritage.

Seeger has spent most of his life performing and recording traditional American string music, starting with a memorable stint with The New Lost City Ramblers in the late 1950s. He has dedicated many years to collecting and preserving folk songs and the artists who performed them.

He shares his famous last name with half-brother Pete Seeger and sister Peggy Seeger, all celebrated as giants in the folk and old time music worlds.
